Aviation industry experts are already talking about the possible impact of
today’s American Airlines crash in New York.

Richard Gritta from the University of Portland says if the crash was caused
by mechanical failure, it could cause nervous passengers to change their
holiday travel plans.

If the cause is linked to sabotage, the impact on the airline industry would
be greater, Gritta says. He says there would be widespread distrust of the
ability to secure the air travel system from terrorists.

He urges not jumping to conclusions until the cause of the crash is
conclusively determined.

But either way, Gritta says, this crash will add to the woes of the airlines
which are already reeling from the shock of September 11th.
