San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds extended his single-season
home run record once again when he hit his 73rd of the year on Sunday
against the Dodgers. The solo shot to right field came in the first inning
on a 3-2 pitch from Dennis Springer in the final game of the season for the
Giants.
Bonds homered in his first two at-bats on Friday for Nos. 71 and 72 for
the year, breaking the 1998 record of 70 set by Mark McGwire. However, his
efforts weren’t enough to keep San Francisco’s playoff hopes alive, as the
11-10 loss, coupled with victories by Arizona and Houston, ended the Giants’
playoff run.
Bonds was not in the starting lineup in Saturday’s game against the
Dodgers. However, he entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning
and singled. Dante
Powell came in as a pinch-runner for Bonds and the
Giants lost to the Dodgers, 6-2.
The leftfielder now has 567 career homers and is six home runs short of
tying Harmon Killebrew for sixth on the all-time list.
Bonds had never hit more than 50 homers in a season entering this year’s
campaign. His previous best was 49 set last season.
With two more walks on Friday night, Bonds also extended his record for
walks in a season to 177. He surpassed Babe Ruth’s total of 170 on Wednesday
night when he walked for the 171st time this season.
