Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith again missed practice on Friday
and will be a game-time decision for Sunday’s contest against Atlanta
because of a sprained right knee.
“It doesn’t look good at all,” said Cowboys head coach Dave Campo. “But
we’ll see how he feels on Sunday.”
Smith has not practiced all week because of a sprained MCL, which also
forced him to miss last Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. He was
hurt during an October 28th game against Arizona.
Troy Hambrick, who rushed for 77 yards on 30 carries as the starter in
last week’s 27-24 overtime loss to the Giants, will likely start Sunday
against the Falcons. He is also bothered by a shoulder contusion and
returned to practice on Friday, but has not taken a hit this week.
“It’s a concern,” said Campo. “We don’t know what’s going to happen.
We’ve got to make sure the other guys are ready.”
Michael Wiley is Dallas’ third-string tailback.
Quarterback Quincy Carter, who began the year as the starter, will be in
uniform on Sunday for the first time since October 7 when he suffered a torn
tendon in his left hamstring and needed surgery. He will be the emergency
quarterback on Sunday.
“We still want to hold him back,” said Campo.
Ryan Leaf will get the start against the Falcons, with Clint Stoerner as
the backup. Leaf replaced Stoerner in the fourth quarter of last week’s game
against the Giants and completed 4-of-8 passes for 85 yards. Stoerner was
13- of-23 for 177 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions.
