THURSDAY’S
GAMES (12/14):

In the battle of the tailbacks, Oregon State’s Ken
Simonton out rushed TCU’s LaDanian Tomlinson 178-124. Simonton’s Beavers also
won the battle on the field beating the Horned Frogs 24-21. Simonton had two
scores, including the game winner to put OSU(11-1) up 24-14 with 10:53 to go in
the fourth quarter. TCU(10-2) scored to pull within three with 1:36 to go, but
failed to recover the on-side kick. TCU turned the ball over three times, twice
on Tomlinson fumbles inside the OSU 40 yard line. Beaver quarterback Jonathon
Smith was 11-17 for 183 yards one score. TCU never led in the game. The loss
means Dennis Franchione now moves to his job at Alabama, while Oregon St. coach
Dennis Erickson moves closer to a showdown with his former team in Miami. If the
Canes beat Georgia Tech, Oregon St. would meet Miami in the quarterfinals.

Michael Vick’s
pass on a two-point conversion play with :18 left fell short as #12 Purdue upset
#5 Virginia Tech 28-26. Drew Brees 16-yard pass to Vinnie Sutherland with 2:28
to play put Purdue up 28-20. But Vick led the Hokies(10-1) on a 9 play drive
that ended with his sensational 21-yard run to score. But the conversion failed
and the Hokies season ends at home losing to the Big Ten champ. Purdue(9-3) was
led by Brees, who was 31-47 for 347 yards and three touchdowns. Vick led Tech by
passing for 202 and running for another 141. But costly turnovers hurt Tech. The
Hokies had a punt blocked and fumbled the ball away three times. Lee Suggs was
held to 87 yards on 22 carries. He also fumbled twice, including a fumble at
Purdue’s 3-yard line late in the third quarter which would have given Virginia
Tech the lead. Purdue moves on to face the winner of the Texas-Washington game
in the quarterfinals.
