2000 COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF
FIRST ROUND
RESULTS & RECAPS
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME RESULTS &
RECAPS
The season is over and the games can begin. After
spending hours and hours debating which teams should receive the ten at-large
bids, our selection committee has completed its work. We have our 20 teams and
are set to kickoff the playoff. Remember, our ten conference winners got
automatic bids, with the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac-10 and SEC champs
getting first round byes.
The committee selected its 20 teams and then
ranked them. The bottom eight teams will play first round games on Sat. Dec. 9.
Teams will be re-seeded after the opening round to set the brackets for the
remainder of the tournament.
Here are the teams that will participate in the
tournament and how they got here:
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS:
AT-LARGE TEAMS:
Also considered, but did not get
in:
Northwestern (8-3) – Loss to Iowa and sizable
loss to TCU hurt.
Ohio St. (8-3) – Needed to beat Michigan.
Auburn (9-3) – A better SEC title game might have bumped Michigan.
Tennessee (8-3) – Big run came too late and only decent win was S. Carolina.
Toledo (10-1) – Considered, but strength of schedule hurt.
RANKING THE TEAMS:
The selection committee ranked the teams 1-20. By
doing so it got the eight teams (teams ranked 13-20) who will play in the first
round. Teams will be re-seeded after the first round into a 16 team tournament
bracket. Teams will also be seeded to avoid rematches until the semifinal round,
so there may be some adjustments to a team’s seed. The top 8 teams in the group
of 20 will host second games. Those teams are:
OKLAHOMA, FSU, MIAMI, WASHINGTON, V. TECH, OREGON
ST., FLORIDA, NEBRASKA.
HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED:
A computer program will be fed all the numbers
and stats of all the teams. Matchups will be played out on a program that is
used to gauge the outcome of a matchup. We don’t want to get too technical here,
so sit back and enjoy and look for game previews and summaries throughout the
tournament.
